Tulipan — Tulip Sensory Cup, 300ml

300ml. Handmade slip-cast porcelain with a glossy glaze, made in Glostrup, Denmark.

We originally designed this cup for a Greek barista competing in Brewers Cup. He wanted a tulip profile — the shape used on the competition circuit for a reason. The narrower top holds aroma above the liquid and channels it toward the nose, so fragrance comes through concentrated. The small flared rim still places coffee on the front of the tongue, but aroma is what this cup is built for. He'd spent months dialling in the coffee and needed a vessel that showed it properly. We made it for him, drank from it ourselves, and liked it enough to add it to the collection. This is the first time it's available outside that original run.

The tulip shape isn't just tradition. A study by Carvalho & Spence (2018) served the same coffee in different cup shapes and found a tulip made aroma read as significantly stronger — for home brewers and professionals alike. The competition circuit landed on this shape for the same reason.

Each Tulipan is a Mix Wave piece — coloured porcelain slips poured and swirled together during casting, so the pattern runs through the body of the cup, not painted on top. Glossy food-safe glaze inside and out. Some of the cups may have different edge feeling. One side could be thicker - other thinner, edges are shaped by hand and this is part of the design.
